What's New in Plone 3
In July 2007, Plone 3 was released to much fanfare. It's a significant improvement over older version of Plone and promises to be an exciting chapter in the history of the Plone CMS. Here's an overview of what's new in Plone 3.
1. New Visual Editor (Kupu 1.4)
This might be the biggest improvement to Plone for non-technical users. Several new features are included to make content authoring more powerful such as
- Captioned Images - Yes folks, it's finally here, captions for your images
- Image Resizing - Upload one image file and insert different sizes on multiple pages
- Insert Videos, Slideshows, and other Multimedia - Embedding YouTube videos on your site is now supported
- Improved Image Upload - Upload and insert an image at the same time
- Anchors - Now you can link to a specific part of a page (sometimes called a bookmark link)
2. Document Locking and Versioning
Now you have the ability to lock a document while working on it, so that others cannot interrupt your work! This has been a long-awaited feature that further enhances Plone's usefulness as a collaboration tool.
Versioning refers to a new tab available in Plone 3 called History. You are now able to compare older versions of the same document and even revert back to older versions, even if you've already saved a new version!

3. User Controlled Portlets
With Plone 3, you now have the ability to manage your left and right columns by controlling portlets. Portlets are those sidebar boxes that typically are used for Upcoming News and Events, Calendars, Email Signup Forms and so on. Prior to Plone 3, these portlets were essentially hands off, but no longer!

4. Faster Performance
Working on a Plone powered site has gotten much faster in version 3. New KSS technology allows you to make edits to a page without having to reload when you push Save. This feature is called inline editing - just click to edit the Title, Description, or Body of a page. Other operations such as publishing a page are faster too.
5. No More Broken Links
Plone 3 comes with a feature that preserves link integrity. If you are attempting to delete an image (for example) that several pages link to, you will be alerted to the fact.
